Smith Micro Poser
Poser Pro

Poser 7 and Poser Pro,are a cheap alternative to creating and animating characters in 3D. You can create your own characters, choose from thousands of pre-made characters (at ContentParadise.com), or you can even customize pre-made templates. You can also export directly to 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, or Lightwave.

Daz3D

Daz3D are the makers of Bryce, Carrara, and Daz Studio (some of the low end 3D modeling applications that can get the job done, but don’t give you the high level of detail and control that the higher end applications do). Bryce is a landscape and terrain editor, Carrara is a modeling application, and Daz Studio is a character building software. All three together give you a nice little studio for making some cool things, at a price that is very easy on your pocketbook.

Autodesk Mudbox

Another digital sculpting application (similar to Zbrush), is Autodesk “Mudbox”. Designed specifically for character sculpting, modeling, and texturing, it is a great application to integrate into your workflow with Maya or 3ds Max (considering that they are all Autodesk applications).

Next Limit RealFlow

RealFlow is a particle-based fluid and dynamics simulator, and is quite possibly one of the best tools for the job on the market to date. Able to operate as a standalone application, as well as a plugin for Maya, 3ds Max, Softimage, Cinema 4D and Houdini, you can create beautiful fluid animations, and even other particle simulations (such as tornadoes, hair, or poker chips falling onto a table…to name a few). All of the particles that are created will work with (and against) each other, using real world physics parameters that you can modify in any way that you see fit.

Rhino3d

Start with a sketch, drawing, physical model, scan data, or only an idea—Rhino provides the tools to accurately model and document your designs ready for rendering, animation, drafting, engineering, analysis, and manufacturing or construction.

Rhino can create, edit, analyze, document, render, animate, and translate NURBS curves, surfaces, and solids with no limits on complexity, degree, or size. Rhino also supports polygon meshes and point clouds. Rhino offers:

Blender

Blender is a 3D graphics application released as free software under the GNU General Public License. It can be used for modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, water simulations, skinning, animating, rendering, particle, and other simulations, non-linear editing, compositing, and creating interactive 3D applications, including games. Blender is available for a number of operating systems, including Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows. Blender’s features include advanced simulation tools such as rigid body, fluid, cloth and softbody dynamics, modifier based modeling tools, powerful character animation tools, a node based material and compositing system and Python for embedded scripting.

ZBrush

ZBrush is a digital sculpting tool that combines 3D/2.5D modeling, texturing and painting. It uses a proprietary “pixol” technology (see below) which stores lighting, color, material, and depth information for all objects on the screen. The main difference between ZBrush and more traditional modeling packages is that it is more akin to sculpting.

ZBrush is used as a digital sculpting tool to create high-resolution models (up to millions of polygons, and theoretically unlimited) for use in movies, games, and animations. It is used by companies ranging from ILM to Electronic Arts. ZBrush uses dynamic levels of resolution to allow sculptors to make global or local changes to their models. ZBrush is most known for being able to sculpt medium to high frequency details that were traditionally painted in bump maps. The resulting mesh details can then be exported as normal maps to be used on a low poly version of that same model. They can also be exported as a displacement map, although in that case the lower poly version generally requires more resolution. Or, once completed, the 3D model can be projected to the background, becoming a 2.5D image (upon which further effects can be applied). Work can then begin on another 3D model which can be used in the same scene. This feature lets users work with extremely complicated scenes without heavy processor overhead.

Paint.NET is primarily programmed in the C# programming language, with small amounts of C++ used for installation and shell-integration related functionality. Its native image format, .PDN, is a compressed representation of the application’s internal object format, which preserves layering and other information. Excluding the installer, text, and graphics, Paint.NET is released under an MIT-like License. It was initially released as completely open source, but due to complaints by the lead developer about users changing the name of the application and selling it without giving the project credit as required by the license, all resource files (such as interface text and icons) were released under a Creative Commons license forbidding modification, and the installer were made closed-source.
